The Assistant Hall Director is a graduate assistant position that works collaboratively with the Student Affairs staff to create a positive learning environment within the residence halls that is consistent with the mission of the college.

Reporting to the Director of Residential Life and Student Conduct, the Assistant Hall Director is responsible for the day-to-day management of a residential community of approximately 250-300 students. Providing direction, mentorship, and supervision to their staff of Resident Assistants (RAs), the Assistant Hall Director works to foster healthy and positive communities that are educational and engaging for their residents. The Assistant Hall Directors serves on the on-call rotation, participates in departmental projects such as RA Selection and Housing Lottery, adjudicates low-level student conduct cases, and collaborates with other campus departments as needed. The Assistant Hall Director is an 11-month, live-in, part-time position (approximately 20 hours per week), and requires evening and weekend on-call work.

Responsibilities:

Student Staff Supervision:

  • Assists with supervision, selection, and training of 5 - 12 Resident Assistants (RAs).
  • Participates in August and January trainings, retreats, and in-service training.
  • Tracks all building programs and activities planned by the RAs. Emergency Response & Community Relations:
    • Serves in the on-call rotation as the primary contact for on-campus emergencies or crises, including evenings and weekends.
    • Upholds and enforces all Housing and Residence Life and College policies, by responding in a timely manner to situations related to the safety, security, and well-being of students.
    • Intervenes, guides, and advises residents through interpersonal conflict, behavioral, emotional, health and safety issues, and serves as contact and/or mediator for roommate conflicts.
    • Adjudicates student conduct matters by investigating low-level incidents, meeting with students, and assigning sanctions. Administrative & Housing Operations:
      • Assists with Residence Hall Opening and Closing procedures at the start and end of each semester and break periods.
      • Submit administrative reports and forms (i.e., room condition reports, room change requests, student conduct files, etc.) in a timely manner.
      • Attends bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with the Director and weekly department staff meetings.
      • Liaises with the Office of Facilities and the Office of Public Safety to maintain the College's residential facilities and address students' needs and concerns.
      • Explains, interprets, and enforces housing policies and procedures to students, parents, faculty, and staff.
      • Assist with departmental projects and initiatives as assigned by the Director.
      • Other duties as assigned. Compensation:
        • Compensation includes partially furnished suite, board plan, and stipend. Applicants accepted into a SMWC graduate program to may receive the tuition remission. The offer of a graduate assistantship does not guarantee acceptance into a SMWC graduate program. Students enrolled in graduate programs at other institutions are encouraged to apply; however, will not receive payment for tuition credits.

          Requirements
          • Bachelor's degree required.
          • Applicants must be either currently enrolled in a graduate program or planning to matriculate in a graduate program for both the fall and spring semesters (full academic year).
          • Previous experience in residence life, housing operations and emergency on-call responsibilities highly desirable.
          • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills are required to effectively communicate with all staff, students, faculty, and visitors.
          • Desire to work collaboratively as a flexible, supportive team member.
          • Experience and ability to positively interact with diverse student populations and groups.
