Chief Operations Officer - Chemical Engineering

Terre Haute, IN

Summary

This company is the world leader in the manufacture of recovered carbon black, and is currently constructing a facility in Terre Haute Indiana facility. The company has plans for up to ten additional facilities across the US over the next five years.

To support this facility growth, the company is looking for a skilled Chief Operations Officer who will be responsible for identifying, developing and constructing new plant locations.

Key Accountabilities

-- Leading the identification of new facility locations, taking into account the business needs including raw material supply constraints, end product markets, logistics needs and infrastructure requirements.

-- Managing procurement of site permits, including land use, zoning, stormwater management, state air discharge permits, state solid and hazardous waste handling permits, state scrap tire and scrap tire processing permits.

-- Negotiating land acquisition.

-- Interfacing with local elected officials to negotiate and obtain state and local benefits packages.

-- Managing infrastructure development including retaining local engineering contractors to evaluate and design geotechnical, electrical, sewer, water, natural gas, data, and other required infrastructure.

-- Leading the construction of new facilities, including managing vendors, schedules, budgets, and staff.

-- Leading the startup of new facility locations until they can be handed off to permanent, local operating staff.

Responsibilities:

-- Quickly learn new technologies and methodologies to further company manufacturing goals.

-- Effectively work with local real-estate firms and attorneys to support site selection and acquisition efforts.

-- Hire and retain employees and vendors who will support company new facility development efforts.

-- Communicate effectively; develop and deliver multi-mode communications that convey a clear understanding of the unique needs of different audiences

-- Build strong teams that apply their diverse skills and perspectives to achieve common goals; creates a climate where people are motivated to do their best to help the organization win

-- Consistently achieve results, even under tough circumstances

-- Hold self and others accountable to meet commitments

-- Relate comfortably and build relationships with people across levels, functions, culture and geography

-- Makes sound decisions, even in the absence of complete information

Education & Experience

-- BS in Engineering, required; advanced degree or professional manufacturing certification(s) preferred

-- 7+ years leadership experience with a large manufacturing organization

-- Proven track record of building a team, managing change, constructing infrastructure, and developing manufacturing capacity.

-- Strong working knowledge and application of lean manufacturing principles; furniture industry experience preferred

-- Strong analytical, problem solving, delegation, and conflict resolution skills.

-- Exceptional leadership, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Education/Experience:

BS Degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering. 10 to 15 years of manufacturing or chemical production.

Physical Requirements:

Work is performed in an office environment and plant environment.

Travel Requirements:

Duties will include extensive travel within the US, including extended visits to future facility sites. Duties may also include travel to company facilities in Germany for a period of up to two weeks at a time during the first year of employment. A valid Passport or the ability to obtain a passport required.
