Driver Summary: Drives ambulance or wheelchair van and/or assists ambulance driver and or emergency medical technician in transportation from one place to another
Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • NoneDuties/Responsibilities:
    • Accompanies and assists emergency medical technicians on calls. Drives ambulances or assists ambulance drivers in transporting sick, injured, or convalescing persons.
    • Places patients on stretchers and loads stretchers into ambulances usually with assistance from other attendants.
      • wheelchairs are pushed by hand and loaded via lift in wheelchair vans
      • Restrains or shackles violent patients with assistance and guidance of emergency medical technician
        • if wheelchair patients become combative upgrade transport reported to dispatch
        • Removes and replaces soiled linens and equipment to maintain sanitary conditions.
        • Replaces supplies and disposable items on ambulances.
        • Reports facts concerning accidents or emergencies to Dispatch.
          • Provide Dispatch with updates on status via electronic devices.Education and Experience:
            • High school diploma or equivalent required.
            • Current driver's license required with good driving history
            • Must be over the age of 21 (insurance coverage reasons)
              • Understanding of rules, regulations, policies, and procedures that apply to ambulance service.
              • Good interpersonal communication skills.
              • Ability to work well under pressure.Physical Requirements:
                • Prolonged periods of sitting while driving.
                  • Must be able to lift up heavy objects such as stretchers and patients safely with assistance.Additional information:
                    Van Drivers should be neat and presentable to the public. They have to have an excellent driving
                    They have to have an excellent driving record.
                    They have to learn to strap the wheelchairs down properly. Put the chest strap on them along with the lap belt. Both straps on the lift have to be used according to policy. If clients are not in a wheelchair and can walk, they have to have seat belts on before leaving the facility.
                    Van drivers need to obey all traffic laws and be careful of corners they turn and not to exceed the speed limit.
                    Van drivers take turns being on call from 8a to 8a and have 45 minutes to be at the office for the call. They have to maintain a phone where they can be reached when on call. If the schedule has been made out and there is a day where they cannot work, it is up to them to find their own relief.
                    If the driver feels like the client is not safe in a wheelchair and will not sit safely in a chair, he can refuse to transport and call dispatch and notify them that it is not safe to transport in a wheelchair. The facility then will call dispatch and arrange for ambulance transport.
