seeking a proactive and meticulous safety expert to support and
enhance the Health, Safety, Environmental (HSE) programs within LRL
laboratories and pilot plant operations primarily in Indianapolis.
The position will support LRL business units at the Lilly Corporate
Center and the Lilly Technology Center North campus. This role will
play a critical part in ensuring compliance with local, state, and
federal regulations while promoting a culture of safety and ongoing
optimization. The position is heavily focused on traditional safety
programs such as lockout/tagout (LOTO), electrical safety, machine
guarding, fire safety, building code compliance, management of
change, and contractor safety, ensuring that lab and pilot-scale
operations meet or exceed regulatory and internal safety
requirements / standards. The successful candidate will collaborate
across teams with R&D, engineering, operations, and facilities
management teams and contract partners to identify risks, implement
effective controls, and maintain a safe working environment. Why

Responsibilities: Drive implementation and ongoing optimization of
Industrial Safety programs in line with Lilly’s global standards,
NFPA, ISO, ANSI and OSHA 1910 regulations. Assist with compliance
oversight for critical safety programs including, but not limited
to: Lockout/Tagout, machine guarding, confined space entry, and
fall protection. Electrical safety (NFPA 70E), fire safety, life
safety, and building code compliance. Manage the LRL Combustible
Dust program (hazard assessments and risk reduction). Robotic
safety, contractor safety, and management of change process. Serve
as the primary liaison for safety compliance in support of: Capital
projects, capital equipment requests, process changes, and
start-up/shutdown operations in lab and pilot plant settings.
Safety integration within automation and robotics initiatives in
R&D and development environments. Perform and coordinate
comprehensive safety risk assessments, inspections, and audits for
research labs, pilot plant facilities, and engineering projects.
Work with site-based HSE Advisors for contractor safety programs
and to help drive risk reduction strategies with responsible hosts.
Stay up to date with changes in safety regulations, code changes,
and industry standard processes (OSHA, NFPA, ANSI, CGA, API) and
proactively recommend program improvements and interpret their
impact on site operations. Maintain targeted training for employees
and contractors on key safety programs, topics, and hazard
recognition / mitigation. Support commissioning and startup of new
lab/pilot equipment with safety reviews and hazard assessments
(Pre-Start-Up Safety Reviews, HAZOPs, or Process Hazard Reviews)
including operations that may involve combustible dust. Lead and
engage in incident investigations, root cause analysis, and
corrective action planning for injuries, near misses, and unsafe
conditions. Assist in emergency preparedness planning, including
fire drills, evacuation and shelter procedures, in coordination
with Lilly Fire Rescue and Lilly Security. Collaborate with lab and
pilot plant personnel to ensure safe handling and scale-up of
chemical and biological processes. Contribute to LRL HSE efforts
related to Lilly’s Life-altering Injury and Fatality Elimination
(LIFE) program. Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in
occupational health and safety, industrial safety, engineering, or
similar related field. 4 years of HSE experience with direct
responsibility for industrial safety programs. Preferred Skills:
Knowledge of OSHA 1910 and associated codes and consensus standards
(NFPA, ANSI, API, etc.). Experience managing safety programs,
performing technical risk assessments, and working across teams in
regulated environments. Persuasive communicator with the ability to
influence diverse partners including scientists, engineers,
facility partners, and leadership. Ability to foster a positive
safety culture and network professionally across global
organizations. Certification (preferred but not required):
Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist
(CIH), or Professional Engineer (PE). Experience supporting
scale-up activities in pilot plants or early-stage manufacturing
with combustible dusts in pharmaceutical, chemical, or R&D
environments. Knowledge and understanding of OSHA VPP program or
prior work experience at an OSHA VPP Star site. Ability to thrive
in a dynamic R&D environment with evolving safety challenges.
General knowledge of safety management systems (e.g., ISO 45001).
Familiarity with robotic safety systems, pressure safety, and
integration of safety in capital project planning. Proficiency with
HSE software platforms and incident tracking tools. Ability to
interpret P&IDs, electrical schematics, and equipment layout
drawings from a safety perspective. Other Information: Typical
schedule: Monday–Friday with flexibility and/or occasional extended
hours. Up to 10% - 20% travel may be required. Office, laboratory,

on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic
location. The anticipated wage for this position is $63,000 -
$162,800 Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a
company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual
